In 1951 Michael Powell spent two weeks in Crete researching possible locations for 'Ill Met By Moonlight'. He visited Ano Meros in the Amari valley - a staunch and loyal village that was blown up in August 1944 with many of its residents massacred . The villagers pointed out to Powell the resistance hideout high above the village below a rocky outcrop near the summit of Mount Kedros. Today I visited it....set at a height of 1150 metres it has a wonderful view over the Amari valley to the Asterousia Mountains 25 miles away. I walked for 9 miles and was out and about for 4 hours and did not see another person!
