The Raid on the Beehive Hut

In January 1943 Arthur Reade, Xan Fielding, George Psychoundakis, Patrick Leigh Fermor and Alec Tarves - all members of SOE - were staying 1175 meters high up in a bleak hidden valley on the east side of the Levka Ori - the White Mountains. They called their hideout 'The Beehive'.

On the 23 January 1943 it was raided by the Germans - you can read accounts of the raid in 'Abducting A General', 'The Cretan Runner' and Xan Fielding's 'Hide and Seek'. My brother Pete White and I were able to find the base in 2014. Last week it was with great pleasure I was able to take Rufus Reade and Patricia Walker there - and we recreated the following photos:
